James Esdaile

1808 - 1859

A Scottish physician, practicing in India, claimed to anaesthetise patients with mesmerism.

Esdaile would produce a hypnotic coma whilst failing to notice the power of suggestion.

He reported a much reduced mortality rate from 50% down to 8% compared to standard anaesthetic.

Esdaile additionally claimed a faster recovery rate.
